They did reply (also snarkily), and I was finally free! And yeah - it is absurd that it's legal. Apparently there is legislation in the works trying to solve this problem, but I'm not optimistic...
Remind me to never, ever join a gym! This is why the free market works best with a good system of regulations; otherwise abuses tend to happen when customers don't have good information and can't easily move their business from one competitor to another. A rule requiring one-click cancellation was recently being discussed at the FTC. For my part, I've decided never to sign up for anything again if I can't cancel it with a click of a button (which is why I am not a Wall Street Journal subscriber, for example, even though I would gladly pay for their reporting).
As someone who isn't American - what if you don't cancel it and just don't show up? I assume you can't cancel it because that have you credit card on file? Is there no way for you to revoke credit card permission from them without going through this hassle?
Oh god. This brings back memories of not being able to cancel a gym membership because I still had x number of months on my contract. I told them I was unemployed and running out of money and they suggested I pay in advance before my money ran out.
This made me laugh out loud. Pain in the butt for you, but I'm glad you were pushed to your limit and had this story to share with us as a result. Companies making it hard to cancel memberships and agreements is truly absurd, although it's kind of like life ain't it? Once you're in, it's not that easy to get out.
Did they reply? Were you finally free??
P.S. I don't understand how this is legal...

Reminds me of that Friends episode: “I WANNA QUIT THE GYM.”
Lol. Served cold. Love it!!!
LOL "you can note in my file—which I assume is digital and allows you to cancel my membership with the click of a button" - pain!
